Spot Light: San Ramon
San Ramon

San Ramon is an East Bay suburb of the San Francisco Bay Area. Though it has only around 74,000 residents, approximately 300,000 people live within 15 minutes driving distance. Of particular interest to our church planting ventures are three new master planned communities. The Bridges includes five neighborhoods surrounding an 18-hole championship golf course. Gale Ranch II has fourteen neighborhoods, many parks and great schools. Windemere, the newest of the large development in San Ramon, features 5 new schools, a community college, a library, a huge community center, a senior center, and 18 neighborhood parks. The local school district is ranked number one in California.

San Ramon is also a major regional employment center. The cityis the headquarters of Chevron Corporation and 24-Hour Fitness, plus the West Coast headquarters of AT&T. Bishop Ranch houses over 200 companies, which means that a large number of people who live in the area can work nearby. Residents point to this as a major contribution to the quality of life they experience in San Ramon.

San Ramon is safe, affluent and educated. Although it is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in America, most church planters can't afford to live there. Yet, it must be reached. Only 16% attend any evangelical church, and less than 1% are Southern Baptists. Partner churches are needed to help reach not only San Ramon, but also several other Contra Costa County cities much like it. Please pray that the Lord of the Harvest send laborers of all kinds to reach these fields.

Debbie Wohler
Debbie Wohler

TAHOE CITY, California - "I want to make a difference," Debbie Wohler says. "The world comes to Lake Tahoe. That's why I'm here as a missionary; it is because this is where the world is."

Each year 12 million people from around the world visit the Lake Tahoe area. Some take Christ home with them.

Debbie, who serves as a resort ministry field specialist for the California Southern Baptist Convention's Healthy Church Group, majored in physical education at Eastern Illinois University. It was there she began to explore a call to missions.

"I had no idea how He could use me because I loved to play. I certainly didn't want to be a nurse in Africa," Debbie laughingly recalls. "I felt God tugging at my heart, so I signed up to do summer missions. That summer back in 1975 changed my life.

"God sent me to Lake Tahoe, and I realized that God could use me like He made me. He knew all about those desires to play - and so He sent me to America's year 'round playground. It was just as if a light-bulb came on. I didn't have to be Lottie Moon or Annie Armstrong. I could be Debbie Wohler, and God could really use me to talk to people about Him. I could, you know, be myself."
